I've been studying a lot lately about poverty and the poor and Thomas Sowell is a great one to go to when in doubt and when you feel the progressive, lefty ideas creeping up.  His "Basic Economics" book really helped me understand the fallacy of "the rich getting richer and the poor getting poorer."
